Merriweather Post Pavilion (2009)

Their eighth studio album, pretty critically acclaimed among hipsters or something. With these guys, you either like them or you don't. Also check out this really fancy optical illusion.

Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not (2006)

One of the fastest selling records of all time, and an arguable classic.

Those that claim that they're not showing off are drowning in denial.

Yellow & Elephant (2008)

Indie with prog influence. Neither yellow nor elephants are mentioned.

No music can think.

Listen!! (2010)

Awesome single of one of my favorite theme songs from that show about tiny Chinese chipmunks that don't play any music.

We'll sing utau yo kanjiru sono mama.

Somewhere in the Between (2007)

Tomas Kalnoky remains a brilliant songwriter on an album that is much more clean than its predecessors, while retaining that punk-edged ska tone that is Streetlight Manifesto's signature sound.

And nobody's going to quench your thirst when the well runs dry, and nobody's going to hold your hand on the day you die.

4x4=12 (2010)

Typical Joel thrown in with a little bit of dubstep here and there, because he doesn't afraid of anything.

Some Girls (1978)

It's the Stones. 6x platinum. One of the greatest classic rock albums of all time - Mick, Keith, Ronnie, Charlie, and Bill at their best.

Friends are so alarming, my lover's never charming. Life's just a cocktail party on the street.

Van Lear Rose (2004)

Awesome Grammy-winning, critically-acclaimed country album produced and with performing by Jack White; it's an interesting combination of his blues rock style and Lynn's gripping classic vocals and guitar.

Oh if this old house could talk, it would break my heart in two.

Planet of Ice (2007)

Math rock.

Out of the shadows she's more passionate.

Champ (2010)

One hell of a second album. Full of quality indie rock.

How the West Was Won (2003)

While only released recently, this triple live album features their performances at the L.A. Forum (June 25, 1972) and the Long Beach Arena (June 27, 1972). Scattered throughout the album are two songs over 20 minutes, so be prepared to sit down and enjoy this one.

Black Cascade (2009)

Sometimes ambient black metal by a band who dislike the black metal trappings.

The dance must begin as dusk gathers around.

Complete Benny Goodman Carnegie Hall Concert 1938 (1950)

Awesome live swing album - this is actually both a recording of the first jazz orchestra performance ever given in Carnegie Hall, as well as the first double album ever! Also, it was originally released in 1950, but this is the remaster from 2006.

"After you've done all the work and prepared as much as you can, what the hell, you might as well go out and have a good time."

The Anatomy Of (2006)

The one and only cover album by the very diverse prog band from North Carolina. Bands covered include Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Mötley Crüe, Counting Crows, Queen, and Soundgarden.

Caught with this virus of my mind.

Abraxas (1970)

Awesome rock album from that band the villain from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Pt. 2 is named after.

And it looks like someone passed you by again.

Prolonging the Magic (1998)

The band's third album, most notable for the single "Never There". The album was recorded after the departure of their original guitarist, and features a rotating number of different musicians to replace him (most notably a member of !!!). Interestingly enough, this album was given a parental advisory sticker on some copies of the CD even though the lyrics contain no profanity. On these versions of the CD, the first track is shortened to "Motor".

01011001 (2008)

Yet another installment in the long running Ayreon progressive metal saga, which spans three albums before this one. (Knowledge of the preceding albums is not required.)

We are dying for tomorrow, we are living for today.

Music For Airports (1998)

The concept of music designed specifically as a background feature in the environment was pioneered by Muzak Inc. in the fifties, and has since come to be known generically by the term Muzak. The connotations that this term carries are those particularly associated with the kind of material that Muzak Inc. produces - familiar tunes arranged and orchestrated in a lightweight and derivative manner. Understandably, this has led most discerning listeners (and most composers) to dismiss entirely the concept of environmental music as an idea worthy of attention.

Over the past three years, I have become interested in the use of music as ambience, and have come to believe that it is possible to produce material that can be used thus without being in any way compromised. To create a distinction between my own experiments in this area and the products of the various purveyors of canned music, I have begun using the term Ambient Music.

An ambience is defined as an atmosphere, or a surrounding influence: a tint. My intention is to produce original pieces ostensibly (but not exclusively) for particular times and situations with a view to building up a small but versatile catalogue of environmental music suited to a wide variety of moods and atmospheres.

Whereas the extant canned music companies proceed from the basis of regularizing environments by blanketing their acoustic and atmospheric idiosyncracies, Ambient Music is intended to enhance these. Whereas conventional background music is produced by stripping away all sense of doubt and uncertainty (and thus all genuine interest) from the music, Ambient Music retains these qualities. And whereas their intention is to `brighten' the environment by adding stimulus to it (thus supposedly alleviating the tedium of routine tasks and levelling out the natural ups and downs of the body rhythms) Ambient Music is intended to induce calm and a space to think.

Ambient Music must be able to accomodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting.

Good Evening New York City (2009)

Awesome live album from one of my favorite artists featuring a fantastic rendition of my favorite song of all time; it's a pretty good live album.

And if you leave me, I won't be late again.

The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me (2006)

Certainly an album appropriate for the season. What initially drew me to it was the cover, which I absolutely love.

Countdown to Extinction (1992)

Awesome heavy metal album, this is Megadeth's best-selling album and has that song about destruction and a symphony on it!

Blue sky, black death, I'm off to meet my maker.

Rage Against the Machine (1992)

The debut self-titled album by the very political band. This album is held in high regard on its high production value, often used by some audiophiles to test speakers.

Bang Camaro (2007)

Arena style rock with a lot of singers. (See here for more information.)

Rebellion starts tonight.

Midnight Blues (1963)

Amazing bluesy jazz record, arguably a jazzy blues record, but it's semantics anyway - the guitar tone here is wonderful, as expected of Burrell.

"My goal is to play with good tone, good phrasing and to swing. I strive for honesty in playing what I feel."

Congratulations (2010)

The fantastic second album by the duo from Connecticut. Really looking forward to their third album due out this year.

They've Actually Gotten Worse Live! (2007)

An indie band gets punk in drublic with that all that entails. (Don't expect stellar musicianship from a drunk punk band.)

I thought the apple fell far from the tree.

The Cars (1978)

Awesome new wave record, this is a reissue from 1999 with fourteen bonus tracks, mostly demo versions of the original album.

It's so easy to play up your breakdown.

Rodrigo y Gabriela (2006)

Two people with two guitars.

There's still time to change the road you're on.

Hospice (2009)

Losing loved ones to a terminal disease may be a horrible thing, but Peter Silberman makes the best of it and wrote one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard. If you haven't listened to this album by this point, you suck and are a terrible person.

Reasonable Doubt (1996)

Awesome debut record from who is now one of the biggest names in the business, definitely an essential.

I see his hunger pains, I know his blood boils.

Icons, Abstract Thee (2006)

The EP before that other album I posted that greg described. It's a lot like it in terms of style.

She taught him what was real.

Ruining it for Everybody (2011)

Their most recent release certainly doesn't disappoint. Much like their previous album, their very unique blending of genres is still very prevalent on this one. Plus, the song names are still pretty pretentious.

For Emma, Forever Ago (2007)

Justin Vernon's debut album. Indescribably haunting vocals, meditative lyrics, simple instrumentals.

This is not the sound of a new man or crispy realization; it's the sound of the unlocking and the lift away.
